Government has decided to close all liquor license premises on National Day (4th February 2009)

The Excise Department Bureau of Special Operations (BSO) raided an illicit liquor distillery in Waikkal, Wennappuwa and recovered contraband worth over Rs. 600, 000.

The spot was raided on information received by the Excise Commissioner General Wasantha Hapuarachchi and arrested one suspect engaged in manufacturing liquor. The Superintendent of Excise, BSO, Upul Seneviratne told that among the contraband recovered 2800 liters of goda (semi brewed liquor), 526 litres of spirit (kasippu), 16 barrels, 17 cans, eight copper coils used to manufacturee the liquor also seized.

The illicit business had been going on for a long time distributing the contraband to the surrounding areas. The excise team led by BSO, OIC Jayantha Fernando and Excise Inspector Angelo Jayamanne were conducting investigations.

The Excise Department conducted a series of raids countrywide for various offences as a part of the Excise Detection week for December from 10 to 17.Officers from Island wide branches detected over 2491 cases.

There were news reports appeared in papers saying that 3758 new liquor permits have been issued in 2006.This is a misleading statements. Liquor licenses have to be annually renewed. There were 3758 Excise licenses functioned in the year 2006.this includes, liquor Manufacturing licenses, licenses issued for producing medicinal preparations, Licenses issued for producing vinegar, Liquor wholesale licenses, Toddy canteens, Toddy Taverns, Hotel Licenses and Hotel bar Licenses (Some 5 star Hotels have 7 or 8 such Bar Licenses at the Hotel premises),Retail Liquor Licenses. Club Licenses, Restaurant Licenses, Cinema Hall Licenses etc, 35 new liquor licenses have been issued during the year 2006.The number of liquor licenses newly issued during the last years are as follows:-

Due to the World Temparance day Government has decided to close all Liquor license premises on 03rd octomber 2007.

Excise officers raided 10 illicit distilleries on the banks of the Bentota river, arrested 10 suspects and seized 112 barrels of fermenting alcohol base liquor, 44 liters of kasippu, 12 copper coils and distilling equipment.

Six of the raids were conducted on moon shiners in the cover of the mangroves of Dedduwa river, a tributary of the Bentota river.

Commissioner General of Excise, Mr. Parakkarama Ekanayake Bandara ordered the raids after complaints were received from the public.

The raid was conducted by the Southern Excise Special Operations Bureau.

It has been decided to close all liquor bars in following Divisional Secretariats in Kandy District from 13.08.2007 to 29.08.2007 due to the Kandy Perahera

The Excise Department has netted a staggering Rs.104,782,211.00 as fines in the first Six months of 2007 by taking stringent approach towards the strict implementation of legislative provisions regarding the abuse of excise rules and regulations. According to the excise data 30,000 suspects were arrested in 29016 successful raids in the first half of the year.

This was a 10.5% increase in comparison with the figures for the corresponding period in 2006. The Department of Excise raided 1493 Unauthorised distilleries, 11067 moonshine retail sales outlets and nabbed 8421 cases for possession of illicit liquor, 1317 heroin and cannabis cases during this period.

The Commissioner General of Excise has imposed that Rs. 31 million as fines for the Technical Crime Reports, which have been detected by Excise Officers in the licensed premises for violation of Excise regulations, during the period under review.

The Commissioner General of Excise has paid a speical tribute to the public as this year's success is largely depended on the information received from Civilians. The Commissioner General appeals for continued Public support to eradicate this menace.

Officers of the colombo Excise Special Operations Bureau Seized 2,700 litres of Kasippu Sprits at Kalaeliya, Jaela early on 13th Of July.The illicit consignment was being transported at that time from a distllary operated in a marsh of Muthurajawella.Two suspects were arested.

Excise sleuts busted the largest illicit liquor transport racket to colombo When they raided a massive manufacturing plant in the Ginoya area. Aressted four people including the mastermind Who is a wealthy businessman.The Marawila Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs. 700,000.00 on the suspects. Officers took in to custody 30,000 litresof Goda, 2250 litres of sprits,3,000Kg of Sugar. The raid was Possible on public tip of to Commissioner General Parakrama Bandara Ekanayake .

During the Poson Season more than 100,000 pilgrims visit Anuradhapura for religious activities. It is our duty to maintain a peaceful environment in this area without liquor and intoxicating drugs. Government has decided to close liquor license places from 27th June to 03rd July 2007. This time we have deployed three special teams from Kandy, Kurunegala and Colombo to combat excise crimes. The officer working in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kebithigollawa Excise Stations also involved in excise operations. All these teams could manage to detect 187 excise raids during the period from 27th June to 01st July. Out of these cases 47 cases were unlawful manufacture of arrack. Action has been taken to file cases for these detections.

In view of the coming Vesak festival Government has decided to close all liquor license premises from 29th April to 05 th May 2007.(Both days inclusive)

Due to the Sinhala & Tamil New year Government has decided to Close all liquor License premises from 12th to 15th April 2007. (Both Days inclusive)

Excise officers raided a massive ganja plantation in the thick jungle at kumbukara in monaragala. The plantation was destroyed by setting it on fire. Excise officers had taken into custody 2025 kilogrammes of dried cannabis ready for marketing.

No licence shall be issued for sale of liquor within a radious of 1 km from the boundry of any sacred area. Steps should be taken to shift all licenced premises for which licence have already been issued to a place situated outside the radious of 1 km from the boundry of the sacred area before 19th December 2006. In case of failure to do so the validity of such licence shall not be extended.

f.Excise Duty on Tobacco RS.10.00(per Kg)
